Acquiring Software

We are currently in the process of migrating our HOWTO articles to a new CCIS Knowledgebase. The content of this page has been moved to the following KB article:

KB0012106: Acquiring Software

Click here to expand the deprecated HOWTO page

CCIS does not license any software for general use within the college, other than a few server-side applications (eg: Zimbra, our Wiki, etc) that are accessed via a web browser. All licensing of other commercial software, including for local install on desktops and laptops, is handled by Northeastern’s central Information Services group.

The following article is a summary of software licensed by NU IS for use by NU faculty/students/staff. It was prepared by CCIS Systems as a convenience for the CCIS community, and we believe it to be accurate (to the best of our knowledge) as of November 1, 2011. When in doubt, please consult with NU IS, and please inform us if our document needs updating.

The one exception to this is our DreamSpark program, which is discussed below.

Need Help?

If you have any questions, calling xHELP will be the best way to get them answered.

Managed Offerings

Managed Environment

The CCIS-WINDOWS managed Windows environment provides Students/Faculty/Staff/Grads with access to most software packages provided by the university through local installs, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, and Application Virtualization. CCIS-WINDOWS machines are provided to Students through our teaching labs, Staff/Faculty/RAs by request, and TA’s when required by a course. Local administrator rights are not given out on our managed windows pcs, systems handles the process of installing packages as requested.

To request software to be installed on your managed machine, or into our managed environment, please submit a request using our submission form: Software Installation Request for Managed Machines (Work in Progress)

NEU MyApps

MyApps is a terminal services farm hosted by NU to allow Faculty/Staff/Students to remote desktop into a machine with access to most of NU’s software offerings. More information on this program can be found here: NEU MyApps

Microsoft DreamSpark

Through a partnership with Microsoft, we are able to offer free copies of most Microsoft products (excluding Microsoft Office) to our Students, Faculty and Staff for educational, non-profit research, or personal use as long as they are a part of the College of Computer and Information Science. More information on this program can be found here: DreamSpark

Software for Non-Managed Machines

Sponsored Accounts for RA and PHD Students

The university allows RA and PHD students to apply for NUNET sponsored accounts for a 3 month period. These accounts are treated as faculty accounts, and thus will allow you to request software directly without requiring your adviser to call on your behalf. These accounts will not give you access to the Software Downloads page on MyNeu, but will give you full access to the offerings of xHELP. Once your sponsored account has been approved (usually 1-2 business days), you will be able to call the help desk directly to request software for a machine that is owned by the University.

Information on Sponsored accounts can be found here: NUNET Sponsored Accounts.

The form that an RA or PHD student needs to fill out can be found here: Sponsored Account Form.

When filling this form out, please be sure to set NUNET Account Required to Yes and choose your faculty adviser as the sponsor.

Licensing Requirements

Most University-owned software is licensed through a Key Management Server (KMS) on NUNET for license compliance. You will either need to connect to NUWAVE-Secure Wireless once every 180 days to activate your product, or utilize Northeastern’s VPN software to keep the product activated. Information on how to connect to Northeastern’s VPN can be found here:Remote Access (VPN) Support. Please note that you must be connected to NUWave-Secure, NUWave-guest does not have KMS access. RA and PHD students without sponsored NUNET accounts will need to have their faculty adviser VPN in on their behalf to activate.

Microsoft Office

The PC and Mac version of Office are both acquired through the same set of instructions. Please specify if you would like the 64-bit version of Office when requesting this software. General information on NU’s Office offerings can be found here: Office 2010 for Windows Office 2011 for Mac

Faculty/Staff/Sponsored Graduate Accounts

The University offers Office 2010 for Full-time faculty, staff, and sponsored grads for installation on their University purchased machines. Office can be acquired by calling extension xHELP to request a copy from the help desk. They will send you a link to where you can download the software from. This software is licensed through Northeastern’s KMS and thus requires you to periodically VPN into their network or connect to NUWAVE-Secure to re-activate.

If you require a copy for a personal machine that is not owned by the University you can acquire one from them for $9.99 as well. The purchased copy comes with a single-use serial number and does not require you to connect to NUNET to activate. Information on this program can be found here: Office Home Use Program

RA and PHD students

We advise that an RA/PHD student follows the instructions above to apply for a sponsored NUNET account. Alternatively, the faculty adviser for the RA/PHD student who needs access to Office can make a request to the help desk on their behalf. This request should be for a machine owned by the university and should specified when making the call.

Students

Students can purchase a discounted copy of Microsoft Office through MyNEU > Tech Marketplace. Alternatively they can use the NEU MyApps service to use Office remotely.

Adobe Acrobat

Faculty/Staff/Sponsored Graduate Accounts

Northeastern provides Adobe Acrobat to all full-time benefits eligible Staff, Faculty, and sponsored grads at the University for their University purchased machine. Adobe Acrobat can be acquired by calling xHELP to request a copy from the help desk and they will send you a link to where you can download the software. This software is licensed through Northeastern’s KMS and thus requires you to periodically VPN into their network or connect to NUWAVE-Secure to re-activate.

The Adobe Suite of products can be purchased through Free and Discounted Software for use on personal machines not owned by the University.

RA and PHD Students

We advise that an RA/PHD student follows the instructions above to apply for a sponsored NUNET account. Alternatively, the faculty adviser for the student who needs access to the Adobe suite must make a request to the help desk on their behalf. This request should be for a machine owned by the university and should specified when making the call.

They also have access to purchase the suite for their personal machines through Free and Discounted Software

According to IS, for the $9.99 Office special, you will need to answer ‘Yes’ to ‘University Email Account Required’ on the Sponsored Account Form, and then enter your new address in the ‘Office Home Use Program’ form. (Unfortunately I cannot confirm that this actually works in practice.)

Does the $9.99 Office Home Use program still work ? The codes given in the site doesnt seem to work .

Christopher Noyes January 29, 2013 at 4:40 pm

Unfortunately Systems does not control the Office Home Use program. Any questions about this will need to be directed at the help desk at 617-373-HELP.
